Central Laos

Overview

Central Laos lies along the middle stretch of the Mekong River and forms the country’s political and economic core. Compared to the mountainous north, the region features broader river valleys, limestone landscapes, and fertile plains that support agriculture and urban life. It is home to Vientiane, the national capital, as well as key towns such as Vang Vieng, Thakhek, and Savannakhet, where Lao Loum communities form the majority alongside diverse ethnic groups influenced by regional trade and cross-border connections.

The climate is tropical monsoon, with a cool dry season from November to February, a hot season from March to May, and a rainy season from June to October. While the dry months are most popular for travel, the wet season brings lush scenery and fewer crowds, offering a different but rewarding travel experience.
